Kootenay Hockey Academy Welcomes Jaysen MacLean as 18U Head Coach

From Kelvin Cech, KHA General Manager / Associate Head Coach

We’re excited to officially announce the hiring of Jaysen MacLean as the new Head Coach of KHA’s 18U team.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had some great conversations with Jaysen. It’s clear his passion, professionalism, and energy make him a perfect fit for our program. After spending every minute of academy action last season with the 18U group, I know firsthand the kind of players we’re bringing back—resilient, skilled, competitive, and hungry to win. Jaysen brings that same drive and focus to the bench, and I’m looking forward to working alongside him in this new chapter. It was very important to me to find the right fit for our returning 18U players.

Here at KHA, our coaching structure is designed to maximize the development experience for every athlete. With Jaysen leading the way on a daily basis and me supporting both the 18U and 17U teams through weekly skill sessions and game-day coaching, we’ve created a dynamic, collaborative environment that our players—and staff—will thrive in.

I’ve always believed that players and coaches should be pulling the rope in the same direction. Jaysen fits that mindset perfectly. His decision to move to Cranbrook to take this next step in his coaching journey speaks volumes about his commitment, and we’re thrilled to have him join the team.

Please join me in welcoming Jaysen MacLean to Kootenay Hockey Academy and the Cranbrook community!

From 18U Head Coach Jaysen MacLean

“I’m beyond excited to join Kootenay Hockey Academy and can’t wait to contribute to the development of our players. The JPHL is a fantastic environment for both players and coaches to grow, and I’m ready to get started.”

Meet Coach Jaysen MacLean

A passionate and proven leader, Jaysen MacLean brings a wealth of experience and a deep love for the game. His coaching career has spanned multiple levels, with a focus on skill development, game strategy, and building positive, high-performing team cultures.

Before joining KHA, Jaysen was behind the bench at the University of Jamestown, where he helped lead the program to back-to-back MCH Conference Championships. As a former player himself, he understands the game’s physical and mental demands and is dedicated to helping young athletes grow both on and off the ice.

Jaysen’s approach centres around creating an environment where players feel supported, challenged, and motivated to be their best every day—and that’s exactly the type of leadership we value at KHA.

We can’t wait to see what’s ahead for our 18U team under Coach MacLean’s direction. Welcome to the family, Jaysen!
